Kami is known for his portraits of introspective subjects, often with eyes closed as though in meditation. His portraits of family, friends and strangers are pulled from personal photographs, and reveal Kami's deep roots in inter-religious and intercultural subjects. Kami has focused on portraiture for the better part of his career, though he also creates abstract paintings inspired by architecture and influences from his childhood in Iran.〔Wyndham, Samantha. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Paris-Sorbonne in Paris, France from 1976–81.
